COLLABORATIVE PIONEER: AN INSIDE INTERVIEW WITH DENNIS TEICHMANN, CO-FOUNDER AT JACANDO

_MG_3001Jacando is a Swiss marketplace for micro-jobs. Private customers but also businesses can find a helping hand for various tasks, including gardening, moving, pet-sitting or an actual job position. In this interview, Dennis Teichmann tells us more about Jacando, the role of micro-jobs in Switzerland and his approach of developing and growing the business. Stella Schieffer, curator for Switzerland got the lowdown.
What is Jacando?

Jacando is a matchmaking service for individuals and companies. For individuals we enable people to find helpers for their daily-life problems, for example gardening, cleaning or moving with our vast database of service providers throughout Switzerland. For companies, we offer a completely new type of recruiting service with a distinct focus on temporary, part-time and entry level positions.

Your tag line is “social microjob”. Why does Switzerland need microjobs and specifically “social microjobs”?

People in Switzerland are very open for new services and have a high affinity for services in general. Private consumers are often intensively committed to their work environment and are looking for any relief they can get. With jacando we make it as easy as possible to find a local helper with dedicated skills and experience – thus saving lots of time in daily life.

How do you position jacando and how do you differentiate yourself from other peer marketplaces, for example TaskRabbit?

Jacando is a matchmaking service for private households and companies, it is not a pure peer-to-peer marketplace.

We help all our private customers to find a helping hand within our large pool of jobbers, similar to Taskrabbit. For companies we offer much more than a pure marketplace-we identify relevant candidates, match individual needs of companies (like education level, background, language skills) and give companies access to a pre-selected, limited number of potential employees. This pre-selection approach is appreciated by our business customers in order to reduce their recruiting efforts.

Furthermore, we offer our jobbers various opportunities from part time jobs, temporary jobs as well as full-time jobs with which we can realize synergies in terms of acquisition of jobbers.

One of the major challenges of marketplaces is to build up their community of customers and service providers. How and where did you start growing your community and how is your strategy evolving?

We believe that services like jacando have to build local communities. We decided to build up local communities in cities one by one. At the beginning of 2013, we started in Zurich and expanded soon to Basel and Bern. By now, we are covering all major regions in German-speaking Switzerland and are also already present in the French-speaking part. As a next step, we want to strengthen our operations in the French-speaking part.

Do you also cooperate with other startups or companies?

Since February 2014, we have been partnering with the Swiss Railway (SBB) offering so-called “services for travelers“, for example booking local city guides. In parallel, we will be launching large cooperations with a real estate portal as well as with a couple of media companies (names cannot be disclosed yet).

What challenges have you faced building jacando and what have you learned? What tips would you give an entrepreneur starting his own startup in the field of collaborative consumption?

We can share two important points for building up an online service:

1) Start with a basic product (only containing the minimal requirements for your service) and learn as much as can from your customer’s feedback

2) Find the right people and define the best team to build your start-up
