Giving up your car has never been easier – if you live in the right city that is. Staying one step ahead in the carsharing game, Berlin carsharing services are now offering one-way, GPS-enabled carsharing. The initial approach to carsharing required members to pick up vehicles from a particular station, reserving the cars in advance for set, prepaid blocks of time and, when done with the car, returning it to the same place. With one-way car-sharing, all you need to do is check the smartphone app to see where the nearest car is parked and take it.
Companies such as DriveNow (a joint venture of BMW and the car rental company Sixt) and Car2Go (a subsidiary of Daimler) are growing in ranks quickly. Their cars are found throughout the city because drivers leave them wherever they find parking near their destination. The amount of time spent driving is charged at an average of 42.5 cents a minute. That’s less than a taxi!
