Today in San Francisco, Airbnb announced the launch of Airbnb Neighborhoods. The new product allows users to find the experiences they want based on their interests and the particular parts of a city that that they want to stay in. Today, it’s coming online with more than 300 neighborhoods in seven cities.
According to co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky, travelers in San Francisco have more than 3,000 choices on Airbnb. And location is the most important criteria for travellers when booking, but Airbnb hadn’t done a great job of highlighting the distinct neighborhoods throughout the city. Airbnb Neighborhoods will help with that.

Check out airbnb’s Facebook. Many hosts are very unhappy w/ the new feature and have seen their inquiries and bookings plummet since it’s launch as have I. I live in Southwest DC which is a wonderful neighborhood which fits into many of the categories they allow users to search yet they don’t even have Southwest listed. In fact, Southwest is the closest neighborhood to the National Mall AND most museums are located in the neighborhood so one would think they would definitely cover that area…. Essentially they are taking business away from me rather than promoting my property. I’ve contacted them on this but they just say they’ll “eventually” list my neighborhood meanwhile I’m losing guests. Not cool.

Hi Jeannine
Thanks so much for this great comment – it’s interesting to hear how Airbnb’s neighborhood feature has actually had a negative impact on areas outside the boundaries.
Hopefully they will open up the feature quickly to allow people to create guides about their own neighborhoods rather than choosing who to profile next!
cheers
Lauren
Update: I just received word from airbnb that they listed my neighborhood! I truly hope other hosts who have had the same concerns have similar luck. Cheers!
I have to echo the statements above. Since neighbourhoods was introduced Airbnb has stopped being a viable way for me to rent my room in central London. I used to have a lot of interest in my place and be fully booked but I don’t get any enquiries now, my place and a lot of really good places don’t show up on neighbourhoods.
