10 Questions for Markus Barnikel, CEO of Carpooling.com

The easiest way to explain Carpooling.com is…

we help to fill the empty seats in people’s cars – connecting drivers and passengers to help them save gas and money, reduce carbon emissions and make new friends.

I believe it is the right moment for Carpooling.com to take off because…

with rising gas prices, unemployment, overcrowding and congestion, the need for affordable mobility is increasing. A car is used about 1 hour a day with an average of 3.75 empty seats. Instead of building new roads and creating more traffic, carpooling.com wants to leverage the largest transportation network in the world: the empty seats in people’s cars. This is hidden infrastructure that we are wasting at a great individual cost.

A unique factoid/statistic that surprises people about Carpooling.com is…
that over a million people carpool through our platform each month – half of which are women.

When I told friends about my idea for Carpooling.com, they said…

“How can you just jump into a car with a complete stranger?”
I would always tell them that when you carpool through us, you don’t actually travel with a stranger. Before even meeting them, you can see their picture, you know the make and color of their car and what other people said about them (Are they a good driver? Did they make frequent stops? Was it a pleasant ride?). It’s certainly far more information than when you just jump into a taxi.

If I wasn’t doing Carpooling.com, I would be…

very bored. Commuting alone is no fun.

My favourite success story so far…

our first carpooling baby! A couple, who met while carpooling, contacted us to thank us for bringing them together. Now they have started their own family of carpoolers.

Something about me that you can’t find on the internet is…

that my favorite ride is the spectacular road into the Bungle Bungle National Park in Australia – one of the most memorable places I have been to.

Three people I would like to meet one day?…

Someone who can tell me how to fix the gear shift of my old mountainbike – still trying. I’d also like to meet Pete Cashmore and Larry Page – two entrepreneurs that have created amazing platforms.

I believe ridesharing has the potential to go mainstream because…

it has gone mainstream already. Collaborative consumption is no longer a niche but a growing movement. Moving millions across cities and countries, carpooling networks have transformed the traditional commute to work into a vibrant form of peer-to-peer transport. Today, people are more willing to share, more mobile and more prepared to adapt their travel habits to ecological concerns – a trend that will continue to grow in 2012.

It’s 2015, and Carpooling.com has achieved…

billions of savings for its users by giving people all around the world access to affordable travel whether they are commuting to work or taking a longer trip.
